The reason can be traced back to data protection policy.
The search giant is constantly improving Android to make it more secure, and privacy policies are changing. There hasn’t been much change so far that has disrupted the “stagnant water” of applications so much. This is now such a measure, as all call recording applications will be removed from the Play Store.
The company has taken steps in the past to discourage developers from creating similar programs. App developers, on the other hand, found a loophole that allowed them to continue using their apps. The Accessibility API had this gap in the shield that still allowed conversations to be recorded. With the introduction of the new policy, which will take effect on May 11, Google will prevent this.
The search giant, in connection with the case, said that this API was not invented to record telephone conversations and expressed displeasure that the developers abused this option. Google has made a similar decision in the past, so it didn’t come as a big surprise to the app developers concerned. From Android 10 onwards, recording calls was not allowed anyway.
It’s important to mention, that doesn’t mean you no longer have the ability to record conversations. There are software solutions that do not use the above API for recording, and there are pre-installed services that can record calls without outside help.
Pixel (a device made by Google) and Xiaomi already have a ready-made solution to record the conversation. In these cases, the abuse is not resolved by abusing the Accessibility API, so they do not violate the policy.
The fact that call recording is offered to us by Google, while banning alternatives for privacy reasons, makes the situation particularly bad.
